Volleyball team finishes regular season with sophomore night

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team ends the regular season Tuesday night with an Orange Empire Conference match against Santiago Canyon at home at 6 p.m.

And it is sophomore night. The Lasers, coach Ryan Windisch and his staff will celebrate the sophomores and players moving on prior to the match.

Irvine Valley was ranked No. 9 in the state last week, and has already captured the Orange Empire Conference title. IVC will await the CCCAA So. Cal. Regional playoff pairings next Thursday morning.

IVC has won nine matches in a row with eight of those victories being sweeps.

Irvine Valley has a record of 18-4 overall and is 14-1 in the OEC.

The Lasers are coming off a 25-21, 25-19, 25-18 victory at Fullerton last Friday.

Five players had at least four kills for IVCin the win over the Hornets, led by sophomore outside hitter Tessa Marocco with nine. Marocco also added 10 digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Chloe Swanson had eight kills and a team-best 14 digs, sophomore opposite Jayli Nealy ended with seven kills and three blocks and sophomore middle blocker Kendall Fraser and freshman middle  locker  Avery Bennett each finished with four kills.

Sophomore libero Gabi Brown chipped in 13 digs and four aces for IVC.

Sophomore Maddie Harkey and freshman Mia Bertolone shared the setting duties with Harkey ending with 19 assists and three digs and Bertolone contributing 13 assists and three digs.

So far on the year, Marocco is averaging 4.14 kills per set, which ranks No. 11 in the state.

Nealy is averaging 4.08 kills per set, which is 14th in the state, Brown is averaging 3.82 digs and Harkey averages 8.09 assists per set for Irvine Valley.

The Lasers are hitting .273 as a team on the year.

Santiago Canyon has a record of 1-19 overall and a 0-15 mark in the Orange Empire Conference.

The Hawks have dropped 14 straight matches.

SCC is led by Tallie Twyman, who is averaging 2.69 kills per set and Erin Wagenbrenner, who is averaging 1.94 kills per set.

Twyman also averages 3.63 digs per set, while Paige Schiefelbein is averaging 2.77 digs per set. Dyana Ulloa paces the squad at 3.63 assists per set.
