Women's volleyball team scores key win at Orange Coast

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team went on the road in a match-up between two of the top 15 teams in the state.

The Lasers, ranked No. 9 in the state came through with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 victory over No. 15 Orange Coast in a key Orange Empire Conference match.

Irvine Valley moved its record to 13-4 overall and 9-1 in conference. Irvine Valley now holds a two-match lead over Orange Coast and Santa Ana in the OEC standings.

This was Irvine Valley's fourth-straight win and fourth sweep in a row. It also marked the Lasers' 10th sweep of the year. And it was the program's 21st-straight victory over Orange Coast.

IVC had another big, attack-night Friday. The team hit .361 overall. This followed up a .512 hitting performance in a sweep for the Lasers over Riverside at home last Wednesday.

Freshman outside hitter Tessa Marocco had 20 kills to lead the way for Irvine Valley. She hit .447 on the night and added six digs.

Sophomore all-state opposite Jayli Nealy hit .524 with 13 kills for the Lasers.

And sophomore outside hitter Angelina Griego, who was named IVC's athlete of the week this past week, ended with four kills and five digs.

Sophomore setter Maddie Harkey ran the offense with 35 assists and had eight digs, sophomore libero Gabi Brown contributed a team-high 16 digs for IVC and freshman middle blocker Avery Bennett added four blocks.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday, hosting Golden West at 6 p.m. in a conference match.
