Women's volleyball team's season ends at home to Ventura

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team had its season end Tuesday night in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association Playoffs.

The Lasers, seeded seventh, were swept by a solid No. 10 Ventura team at home, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21.

Irvine Valley finishes its season with a record of 16-5 overall. Ventura, a tri-champion in the Western State Conference moved to 18-5 overall and will host Canyons on Saturday at home.

In a night full of upsets, Canyons swept No. 2 Pasadena City. No. 3 in Southern California San Diego Mesa and No. 4 Cypress also were swept.

IVC jumped out to a 20-11 lead in the first set, but was out-scored, 14-1, the rest of the set.

Ventura was in control after that.

The Pirates won the second set, 25-16.

And after a back and forth third set, the Pirates took advantage late for the win.

Ventura earned its first playoff victory since 2018 and will host another upset winner in the first round, Canyons (beat No. 2 Pasadena City), on Tuesday.

Irvine Valley hit just .170 on the night as a team against Ventura. The Pirates hit .309 as a team in the match.

Freshman opposite Jayli Nealy had a solid night with 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .444.

Freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Sanchez added 10 kills and eight digs, sophomore libero Alexandra Pestolis ended with 14 digs and freshman setter Maddie Harkey had 25 assists and five digs.

Ventura was led by Alexix Baloyo with 15 kills and a .448 hitting percentage and setter Nevada Knowles had 35 assists. Victoria Whitney added 10 kils and two blocks for the Pirates.
