Women's volleyball team upset on the road at Golden West

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team dropped its first Orange Empire Conference match of the year.

After winning its first two OEC contests, the Lasers, ranked No. 9 in the state, were upset by No. 24 Golden West, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17, Friday night at Golden West.

IVC saw its record fall to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in conference, while Golden West improved to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in conference.

Golden West still hasn't dropped a set in its nine wins so far this season. It's lone loss was a three-set loss against No. 5 Cypress.

Irvine Valley got 14 kills and 12 digs from freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Sanchez and freshman opposite Jayli Nealy added 10 kills for the Lasers.

But no other player had more than three kills and the Lasers hit just .116 on the night.

Freshman setter Maddie Harkey finished with 27 assists and freshman libero Alexandra Pestolis contributed 14 digs.

Golden West hit .238 as a team and was led by Adriana Morales with 11 kills.

It doesn't get any easier for IVC next. The Lasers play host to Cypress next Wednesday at 6 p.m. Fans are welcome to attend the match with social distancing. Masks are also required.
