Women's volleyball team stays unbeaten with Santa Ana sweep

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team remained one of two undefeated teams in the state with a sweep at Santa Ana in an Orange Empire Conference match on Wednesday night.

The Lasers, ranked second in the state, topped Santa Ana, 25-19, 25-14, 25-8.

It was the squad's ninth straight win and sixth sweep of the year.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in conference. Santa Ana's record went to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in conference.

Top-ranked Feather River (19-0) is the only other undefeated team in the state besides Irvine Valley.

The Lasers trailed at Santa Ana, 14-12, in the opening set, but turned things around after that.

Irvine Valley came back for the 25-19 win in the first set and rolled from there.

The Lasers ended up hitting .373 on the night. Sophomore outside hitter Lea Kruse led the way with 15 kills. She hit .389 and also added five digs and three blocks.

Sophomore middle blocker Kristin Austin continued her solid play with 13 kills and a .480 hitting percentage. She also had five blocks. Austin ranks second in the state in hitting percentage at .442.

Sophomore outside hitters Alaina Gendale and Gabriela Griego each added five kills. Griego hit .455, while Gendale added six digs.

Sophomore libero Anna Unke had 18 digs with freshman defensive specialist Lexie Pereira contributing 10 digs.

Sophomore setter Truth Hafey, who leads the state in assists, had 32 on the night to go along with six digs and three blocks in the win over Santa Ana.

Irvine Valley will go after its 10th win of the season on Friday when it plays a conference match at Santiago Canyon at 6 p.m.
