Women's volleyball team ranked No. 2 in state once again

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team was ranked No. 2 in the state for the second straight week in the California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

The Lasers are off to a 7-0 start and have swept five of their seven opponents.

They started with five straight sweeps before beating previous No. 21 Long Beach City and No. 11 MiraCosta last week in four sets each at home. MiraCosta is up to No. 7 this week.

Irvine Valley has won 21 of 23 sets against opponents this season.

Against MiraCosta last Friday,  Irvine Valley got 14 kills each from sophomore outside hitters Lea Kruse and Gabriela Griego, nine kills from sophomore outside hitter Alaina Gendale and seven big kills and a spark off the bench late from freshman outside hitter Erin Finley in the win.

Kruse also had 21 digs with sophomore libero Anna Unke contributing 12 digs and freshman defensive specialist Lexie Pereira adding 10 digs.

Sophomore setter Truth Hafey, who leads the state in assists, had another solid match with 49 assists, three blocks and two digs.

Hafey is averaging 12.05 assists per set, which leads the state.

Griego ranks third in the state in hitting percentage at .410 and Austin is eighth in the state at .385.

Sophomore outside hitter Lea Kruse leads the way for IVC, averaging 3.35 kills, 4.00 digs and 0.85 aces per set.

As a team, Irvine Valley has a hitting percentage of .334 and is averaging 13.65 kills and 2.91 aces per set.

The Lasers don't play Wednesday night, but begin Orange Empire Conference play on Friday at home against Fullerton at 6 p.m.

Fullerton has a record of 4-3 overall. The Hornets have wins over Santa Barbara City, LA Harbor, Mt. San Antonio and Santa Monica.
