Women's volleyball team sweeps Rustlers on Dig Pink Night

The Irvine Valley volleyball program shined bright on and off the court on Friday night.

The men's team did its part in hosting the annual Dig Pink Night for the women's squad in its match against Golden West.

The event was in support of the Side-Out Foundation for breast cancer awareness and treatment.

The IVC women's team took care of business on the court with its 12th sweep of the season. The Lasers, ranked No. 1 in the state, beat the Rustlers, 25-8, 25-8, 25-12, to stay unbeaten on the year.

The win was also Irvine Valley's 41st in a row, which is a program record. Irvine Valley improved to 14-0 overall and 10-0 in conference.

The Lasers dominated each and every set.

Irvine Valley jumped out to a 17-1 lead in the first set and never looked back.

IVC was up, 15-3 in the second set after an ace by sophomore specialist Jade Parham.

Irvine Valley led, 20-4, after an ace by freshman outside hitter Alaina Gendale and then a kill by freshman outside hitter Gabriela Griego.

A kill by Griego set up set point and then sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni ended things with a kill.

In the third set, IVC raced out to a 12-5 lead after a kill by freshman outside hitter Lea Kruse. The team led, 16-11 after a kill by Gendale and was up, 17-11 after a block by sophomore middle blocker Jacqueline Wolfe and Gendale.

A kill by Wolfe gave the Lasers match point at 24-11. And two points later, Griego finished off the match with a kill.

Gendale led the Lasers with 10 kills. Vortouni finished with ninke kills and Griego, Kruse and freshman middle blocker Kristin Austin each contributed six kills in the win for IVC.

Vortouni also had five blocks with Austin adding four blocks and Wolfe ending with three blocks, including two solos.

Kruse tacked on eight digs and four aces. Sophomore libero Renata Bath had 12 digs and freshman setter Truth Hafey had a solid night with 33 assists and 10 digs.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday at Fullerton in a conference match at 6 p.m.
