Women's volleyball team still at No. 1 in fourth state poll of '18

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team is ranked No. 1 for the fourth week in a row in the California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association State Top 25 Poll.

Irvine Valley is off to a 9-0 overall start and has won its first five matches in Orange Empire Conference play.

IVC has also won 36 matches in a row dating back to 2016.

Irvine Valley, which has still yet to drop a set so far this season, recorded two more wins last week. Both were on the road.

The Lasers beat Santa Ana, 25-12, 25-6, 25-10, last Wednesday and then defeated Santiago Canyon, 25-16, 25-13, 25-11, on Friday.

On Friday, Irvine Valley got a big night from outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni, who had 19 kills, hit .739 and recorded three blocks. Freshman middle blocker Kristin Austin had 10 kills and hit .697. Sophomore libero Renata Bath added 14 digs. And freshman setter Truth Hafey finished with 37 assists.

Irvine Valley hit .419 on the night and is hitting .376 overall on the season.

The Lasers are led by Vortouni (3.30 kills per set and a .376 hitting percentage), freshmen outside hitters Gabriela Griego (2.85 kills per set and a .335 hitting percentage) and Lea Kruse (2.67 kills per set and a .341 hitting percentage), sophomore middle blocker Kylie Miller (2.00 kills per set and a .434 hitting percentage), Austin (1.68 kills per set and a .500 hitting percentage), Hafey (11.26 assists per set) and Bath (3.52 digs per set).

Vortouni ranks second in the conference in hitting percentage and fourth in the conference in kills per set. Griego ranks sixth in the conference in kills per set and fourth in hitting percentage and Kruse is third in hitting percentage.

Sophomore middle blocker Jacqueline Wolfe is fifth in the conference in blocks per set at 0.71, Kruse is second in aces per set at 0.67 and Hafey leads the conference in assists per set. Hafey is also third in the state with her 11.26 assists per set.

Irvine Valley has a bye in its schedule on Wednesday and plays again on Friday when it travels to Riverside City for a 6 p.m. OEC match.

Gavilan from Northern California stayed at No. 2, El Camino remained at No. 3 and Grossmont stayed at No. 4 behind Irvine Valley in the poll. Cabrillo is at No. 5 with the rest of the top 10 including Long Beach City, Hartnell, Bakersfield, Fresno City and Moorpark.

Other OEC colleges in the poll include Orange Coast at No. 20 and Cypress at No. 25.
