Women's volleyball team tops state rankings once again

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team is ranked No. 1 for the third week in a row in the California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association State Top 25 Poll.

Irvine Valley is off to a 7-0 overall start and has won its first three matches in Orange Empire Conference play.

IVC has won 34 matches in a row dating back to 2016.

Irvine Valley, which has still yet to drop a set so far this season, recorded two more wins last week.

The Lasers beat Golden West, 25-15, 25-11, 25-17, on the road last Wednesday and then defeated Fullerton, 25-21, 25-21, 25-22, at home over No. 17 Fullerton last Friday.

The Lasers are led by freshmen outside hitters Gabriela Griego (3.14 kills per set and a .358 hitting percentage) and Lea Kruse (3.07 kills per set and a .346 hitting percentage), sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni (3.00 kills per set and a .338 hitting percentage), freshman setter Truth Hafey (11.19 assists per set) and sophomore libero Renata Bath (3.38 digs per set).

Griego ranks second in the conference in hitting percentage and fifth in kills per set. Kruse is third and Vortouni is fourth in hitting percentage, sophomore middle blocker Kylie Miller ranks third in blocks per set at 0.71 and Hafey leads the OEC in assists per set.

Irvine Valley is hitting an impressive .363 as a team.

Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday night, traveling to Santa Ana for a 6 p.m. conference contest.

Gavilan from Northern California stayed at No. 2 and El Camino remained at No. 3 behind Irvine Valley in the poll. Grossmont climbed to No. 4 and Moorpark moved up a spot to fifth.

The rest of the top 10 included Hartnell, Cabrillo, Sierra, Long Beach City and Bakersfield.

Other OEC colleges in the poll include Cypress at No. 19 and Orange Coast at No. 22.
