Women's volleyball team sweeps again, win streak up to 33

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team has now won 33-straight matches dating back to 2016.

The Lasers, ranked No. 1 in the state, moved to 6-0 on the year with a 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 win in an Orange Empire Conference match at Golden West on Wednesday night.

Along with the 33 and 6-0 numbers, the Lasers also have yet to lose a set this year. They have won 18 in a row.

And Irvine Valley, showing its depth, had another player star on Wednesday.

This time it was freshman outside hitter Alaina Gendale, who finished with a team-high 11 kills. Irvine Valley had five players with at least six kills on the night.

Freshman outside hitter Gabriela Griego added nine kills and hit .471, sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni had nine kills and hit .409, freshman middle blocker Kristin Austin ended with six kills and hit .625 and sophomore middle blocker Kylie Miller had six kills and hit .417.

The Lasers hit .398 as a team on the night. Freshman setter Truth Hafey ran the offense with 35 assists. She also chipped in two kills, eight digs and three aces.

Miller led the team with four aces as IVC racked up 11 aces in the match.

Sophomore libero Renata Bath contributed 12 digs and freshman defensive specialist Anna Unke also had 12 digs.

Irvine Valley will try to make it seven wins in a row when it hosts Fullerton on Friday in a conference match at 6 p.m. Fullerton with a record of 6-2 overall was ranked No. 17 to start the week.

The Hornets fell in four sets to unranked Saddleback in a conference match on the road on Wednesday.
