Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team made another statement early in the 2018 season on Wednesday night on the road.
The Lasers, who won the California Community College Athletic Association title last season, but return basically a brand new squad this year, swept at College of the Canyons.
It took five sets for IVC to dispatch of Canyons in the semifinals of the state tournament a year ago.
Irvine Valley came out on top, 25-23, 25-13, 25-15, to improve its overall record to 2-0.
Canyons suffered its first loss and fell to 2-1 overall.
The Lasers battled for a win in a tough first set and then cruised from there.
Irvine Valley trailed, 6-4, and later, 13-12, in the first set, but tied the match at 19-19.
IVC won six of the next 10 points to take the early lead.
Irvine Valley cruised from there, playing its best volleyball of the night in the second set before closing things out in the third for the sweep.
Irvine Valley also swept Long Beach City last week at home.
The Lasers hit an impressive .367 on the night, making just 10 total team hitting errors on 88 attempts.
Freshman setter Truth Hafey ran the explosive offensive with 37 assists. She also added nine digs.
Freshman outside hitter Gabriela Griego had 13 kills and hit .462, sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni finished with 10 kills and hit .409, freshman outside hitter Lea Kruse had eight kills 15 digs and sophomore middle blocker Kylie Miller ended with six kills, three blocks and hit .417.
Sophomore libero Renata Bath contributed 13 digs and freshman outside hitter Alaina Gendale had six digs.
Irvine Valley will try and make it three wins in a row to begin the year on Friday when it hosts Miramar at 5 p.m. Miramar is a new women's volleyball program in the state this year.
