Women's volleyball team takes care of Long Beach City

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team wasn't at its best, but still had enough to stay undefeated.

The Lasers swept their fourth opponent of the season, beating Long Beach City, 25-20, 25-23, 25-21, on the road on Friday night.

IVC improved its record to 5-0 on the year. Long Beach City slipped to 1-3.

Irvine Valley, which hadn't hit under .303 as a team in a match this season, finished at .281 on Friday.

But the Lasers got a big night from sophomore outside hitter Olivia Aguilar in the win.

She finished with a career-high 25 kills, hitting .380 for the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Taira Ka'awaloa added 14 kills, 11 digs and three assists.

Sophomore libero Gabi Lau had 14 digs and three assists and sophomore setter Megan Ramseyer had 42 assists and nine digs.

Freshman defensive specialist Renata Bath chipped in seven digs and freshman outside hitter Alyssa Vortouni added five kills.

IVC had 50 kills to 30 for Long Beach City.

Irvine Valley led, 24-13, in the first set after consecutive hitting errors by the Vikings.

Long Beach City won seven points in a row to pull within 24-20.

But a service error by the Vikings finished the set.

Long Beach City jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the second set, but the Lasers scored eight points in a row.

A kill by Aguilar tied the score at 10 and then an ace by Alma Entesari gave IVC a 11-10 advantage.

It was back and forth from there until Aguilar took over. She tied the set at 22 with a kill and then at 23 with another kill.

A hitting error by LBCC gave Irvine Valley a 24-23 lead and another kill by Aguilar ended the set and gave the Lasers a 2-0 lead.

Tied, 8-8, in the third set, Irvine Valley used a 9-3 run to take control.

A kill by Aguilar and then a hitting error by the Vikings put Irvine Valley in front, 17-11.

Long Beach City only got as close as three points later in the set.

A kill by Aguilar off an assist from Ramseyer gave Irvine Valley match point at 24-20. And two points later Aguilar ended the match with another kill off a feed from Ramseyer.

Irvine Valley plays again at home on Tuesday, hosting Palomar at 5 p.m.

The Lasers then play their first Orange Empire Conference match of the season on Friday at home at 6 p.m. when they take on defending OEC champion Cypress.
