Four women's volleyball players named to all-OEC teams

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team recently had four players named to all-Orange Empire Conference teams.

Freshman outside hitter Taira Ka'awaloa and sophomore middle blocker Hailey Riden were each selected to the first team and sophomore outside hitter Lucee Fitzgerald and freshman middle blocker Kylie Miller were picked to the second team.

The four players helped Irvine Valley end the season with a record of 15-7 overall and 11-5 in conference, which was good for fourth place.

The Lasers won four matches in a row, including upsetting Santa Barbara City in the Southern California Regional Playoffs, before falling to El Camino in the playoffs.

Ka'awaloa led the team in kills and kills per set. She averaged 3.22 kills per set and had 267 total kills. Ka'awaloa ranked sixth in the conference in kills per set.

She also averaged 3.13 digs per set, which ranked third on the squad, and had 14 aces.

Ka'awaloa had 15 matches with at least 10 kills. He season-high of 27 kills came in an important five-set win at Saddleback on Nov. 2.

Riden was named all-conference for the second year in a row. She was picked as a second team player in 2015.

This year, Riden finished with 99 total kills and averaged 1.46 kills per set. She hit a team-best .309 and also paced the team in blocks with 77 for a 1.13 per set average.

Her block total ranked first in the conference.

Fitzgerald ended with 175 kills and a 2.19 kills per set average. She also led the team in digs with 298 for a 3.73 per set average. And Fitzgerald was third on the team with 24 aces.

She had 10 matches with at least 10 kills, including a season-high 15 in Irvine Valley's five-set win at Saddleback.

Miller improved with each match for the Lasers. She ended with 121 kills and a 1.68 per set average. She recorded a season-high 13 kills in Irvine Valley's five-set upset win over Santa Barbara City on the road in the first round of the playoffs.

Miller had 71 blocks, which was second best on the team. She averaged 0.99 blocks per set. The total ranked second in the conference.

She was also second on the team in aces with 30 and hit .284 on the year.
