Athletes honored in annual end of year awards luncheon

Irvine Valley handed out its end of the year awards last week at the annual scholar athlete banquet on campus.

Athletes of the year, scholar athletes of the year, Orange Empire Conference Character Champions, community ambassadors, team of the year, coaches of the year and campus service awards were among those handed out.

Irvine Valley also featured 88 scholar athletes in its 13 sports during the 2015-16 school year.

The IVC baseball team led the way with 16 scholar athletes. The men's soccer team had 13 scholar athletes and the women's soccer team and women's beach volleyball team each had 12 scholar athletes.

Scholar athletes for baseball were Ryan Abady, jarrett Anton, Lucas Bockenstette, Joseph Chacon, Brandon Chambers, Jordan Gillerman, Joseph Gomez, Kyle Goodbrand, Andrew Jimenez, Matthew Markus, Dillon Millar, Cole Millerd, Austin Reynolds, Adam Rossit, Tyler Venturelli and Tyler Wagner.

Goodbrand had a 4.0 grade point average and Bockenstette, Markus and Wagner had between a 3.75 and 3.99 GPAs.

Women's basketball scholar athletes included Aaleah Brown, Morgan Bryant, Tara Casey, Jada Haynes, Erika Mercado, Kydell Pearson, Serena Saba, Kasey Smit. Saba had between a 3.75 and 3.99 GPA.

Men's basketball scholar athletes were Tanner Aguera, Anthony Hernandez, Chris Loss and Isaiah Milan. Hernandez had a 4.0 GPA.

Women's badminton scholar athletes were Bo ma and Qian Zhang. Mo had a 4.0 GPA.

Men's golf scholar athletes included Joe Gordon, Andrew Lichty and Bruce Miranda. Gordon had between a 3.75 and 3.99 GPA.

Women's golf scholar athletes were Liliana Gutierrez, Lara Kyaw, Alexis McLachlan, Yuwei Peng. McLachlan had a 4.0 GPA and Peng had between a 3.75 and 3.99 GPA.

Men's tennis scholar athletes included Octave Bellet, Mark Hardeback, Kevin Pham, Flavien Raveau, Sameer Soni and Ran Van de Water. Soni had a 4.0 GPA.

Women's tennis scholar athletes were Sarah Mae Garcia, Sierra Mazzarini, Karina Ryabokonova and Samantha Schwarz. Ryabokonova had a 4.0 GPA.

Men's soccer scholar athletes were Connor Elder, Omar Elquosey, Joseph Ferguson, Jose Gamboa, Alan McTiernan, Kendrick Nguyen, Cesar Ortiz, Jose Pantoja, Jesy Perez, Sebastian Piema, Umayr Syed, Ethan Thrall and Toby Waterman. Ferguson and Nguyen each had 4.0 GPAs and Ortiz had between a 3.75 and 3.99 GPA.

Women's soccer scholar athletes were Johana Abarca, Christina Anderson, Alexandra Benedict, Brenda Chopin, Helene Drean, Virginia Hickman, Crystal Lefebvre, Suilma Martinez, Kirsten McMillian, Payton Purcell, Hannah Thetford and Rebecca Trejo. Abarca had a 4.0 GPA and Anderson and Hickman had between a 3.75 and 3.99 GPA.

Beach volleyball scholar athletes were Diamonique Brogan, Juju Cannon, Hailee Earnest, Rachael Woods, Taylor Askins, Cozette Hawyrliak, Hannah Matt, Emily Reinking, Hailey Riden, Kayla Scheevel, Kayla Shields and Brittany Tuliau. Reinking and Tuliau each had a 4.0 GPA and Riden and Scheevel had between a 3.75 and 3.99 GPA.

Women's volleyball scholar athletes were Askins, Hawryliak, Matt, Reinking, Riden, Scheevel, Sields, Tuliau and Jenna Olbright.

And men's volleyball scholar athletes included Robert Ryley, Sahand Seifollahi and Andrew Thompson.

Irvine Valley's scholar athletes of the year were Reinking from women's volleyball and beach volleyball and Cohen from men's tennis.

The scholar athlete team of the year was women's volleyball.

Irvine Valley's OEC Character Champions Award winners were Lefebvre from women's soccer and Gillerman from baseball.

The college's Community Ambassador Awards winners were Hickman from women's soccer and Hernandez from men's basketball.

The 3C4A Achievement Award went to Ortiz from men's soccer.

The Anna L. McFarlin Sport-For-All Service Awards went to Professor Gary Rybold from the communications department and Vince Cooper in video production.

Women's tennis coach and former IVC player Amber Vann was given the Alumnus of the Year Award.

The Irvine Valley team of the year was men's tennis, which won its third straight Orange Empire Conference title and second CCCAA State Championship in a row. Irvine Valley also had the state men's singles champion in Javier Callejo and the state champion doubles team of Bruno Figlia and Scott Paz.

Irvine Valley's coaches of the year were Martin McGrogan with men's soccer and Tom Pestolesi for women's volleyball and beach volleyball.

And the athletes of the year were Scheevel from women's volleyball and beach volleyball and Waterman from men's soccer. Scheevel helped Irvine Valley to Orange Empire Conference titles in both women's volleyball and beach volleyball and to a second-place finish in the state in beach volleyball. She was also named the conference player of the year in women's volleyball.

Waterman led Irvine Valley to an Orange Empire Conference title in men's soccer. He paced the conference in goals and points and was named the conference's player of the year.
