The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team made quick work of San Diego Mesa in the first round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
The Lasers, seeded eighth, rolled past the No. 9 Olympians, 25-15, 25-15, 25-6.
Irvine Valley, which won the Orange Empire Conference and is the defending state champion, improved its record to 16-5 on the year.
"It is one of the best matches we've played," IVC coach Tom Pestolesi said. "Our kids are playing so together right now. It is just fun to watch them play."
The Lasers, who moved on to the second round of the playoffs on Saturday, got 15 kills from freshman right side Olivia Aguilar, nine kills and nine digs from sophomore outside hitter Kayla Scheevel and five kills each from freshman middle blockers Hailey Riden and Kayla Shields.
Sophomore libero Emily Reinking finished with 12 digs and four aces and sophomore setter Jenna Olbright had 32 assists and eight digs.
"Everything was working right," Pestolesi said. "And the balance we've had has been great. This team just continues to gain confidence."
Irvine Valley only made six hitting errors all night and was only blocked once.
The Lasers dominated from the start, jumping out to an early lead in the first set and never looking back.
Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Goodman finished the set with an ace.
Irvine Valley raced out to a 9-3 lead in the second set. San Diego Mesa didn't get closer than five points the rest of the way.
A kill by Aguilar off an assist from Scheevel put IVC ahead, 22-13. An ace by Goodman gave Irvine Valley a 24-14 lead and two points later Scheevel ended the set with a kill.
Irvine Valley was at its best in the third set. The Lasers won the first 13 points. IVC was up, 15-1, after a kill by Scheevel.
Three straight blocks by Riden and Olbright, Scheevel and Riden and Olbright again put Irvine Valley ahead, 21-4.
The Lasers reached set point on a hitting error by San Diego Mesa. Two points later, another hitting error ended the match.
Irvine Valley moves on to play at No. 1 Santa Barbara City on Saturday night in the second round. Santa Barbara City rallied to win the final three sets and beat No. 16 Mt. SAC in five in the first round on Tuesday.
