Women's volleyball team still in first place after tough loss

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball can't get by Fullerton this season.

For the second time in Orange Empire Conference play, the Lasers fell to Fullerton.

This time it was on the road in five sets on Friday night.

Both of the Lasers' losses in conference have come to Fullerton.

The Hornets came out on top, 28-26, 18-25, 25-23, 23-15, 15-9 at Fullerton.

Irvine Valley's record slipped to 12-5 overall and 9-2 in conference play, while Fullerton improved to 12-7 overall and 7-4 in conference.

Thanks to Cypress falling to Golden West on Friday night, Irvine Valley, which was ranked No. 11 in the state, still remained in first place by itself in the conference standings.

IVC leads Cypress by one match with three to play in the conference schedule.

Irvine Valley is at Saddleback on Tuesday night (moved to Tuesday because of Wednesday's Veterans Day holiday, hosts Cypress on Friday and then travels to Orange Coast next Wednesday to finish the regular season.

The Lasers hit just .194 as a team at Fullerton last Friday.

Freshman right side Olivia Aguilar led the squad with 14 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Scheevel had nine kills and 13 digs, and freshman middle blocker Hailey Riden had eight kills, hit .368 and had 10 blocks.

Sophomore libero Emily Reinking finished with 22 digs, freshman defensive specialist Cozette Hawyrliak had 11 digs and sophomore setter Jenna Olbright ended with 40 assists and 12 digs.

Fullerton hit .225 in the contest and was paced by Alex Winfield with 14 kills.
