Women's volleyball team sweeps Santa Ana to open conference

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team started Orange Empire Conference play with a 25-8, 25-17, 25-8 sweep at Santa Ana last Friday night.

Irvine Valley hit a season-high .472 in the win with a number of players contributing.

Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Scheevel was at the top of the list. She finished with 12 kills and 12 digs and hit .571 in the match. Scheevel had 12 kills in 21 attempts with no errors.

Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Matt finished with seven kills and four digs and freshman middle blocker Hailey Riden ended with six kills. She hit 1.000 on the night with her six kills coming on six swings.

Freshman opposite Olivia Aguilar and freshman middle blocker Kayla Shields each added four kills, sophomore libero Emily Reinking had 12 digs and two aces and freshman defensive specialist Cozette Hawyrliak contributed with six digs and three aces.

Sophomore setter Jenna Olbright ended the match with 29 assists, six digs and three aces.

Irvine Valley has a big upcoming week in conference action. The Lasers, who are ranked No. 16 in the state, host Golden West on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and then travel to Riverside for a match on Friday at 6 p.m.
