Volleyball's Mitchem, Doran and Pestolesi earn more honors

Irvine Valley women's volleyball team sophomores Annie Mitchem and Marisa Doran were recently picked to the CCCWVCA 2014 all-state/region teams.

And Laser coach Tom Pestolesi was chosen as the Southern California co-coach of the year.

Mitchem, Doran and Pestolesi helped lead Irvine Valley to its first ever CCCAA state championship title two weeks ago at Cabrillo College.

Irvine Valley finished the year with a record of 27-0 overall.

Mitchem, a dominant middle blocker, was named all-state for the second straight year after ending the season leading the state in hitting percentage at .517. She was also fourth in blocks per set at 1.24, 10th in total kills with 358 and 13th in kills per set.

Mitchem, who has signed to play at Hawaii next year, was also picked as the Orange Empire Conference MVP for the second straight season this year.

Doran, one of the best outside hitters in the state, was selected all-Southern California region for the first time.

Doran ranked 28th in the state in total kills with 293, 28th in hitting percentage at .320 and 38th in kills per set at 3.41.

Doran was also picked first team all-conference two years in a row.

Mitchem and Doran helped Irvine Valley hit an impressive .344 as a team this season.

Pestolesi earned coach of the year honors in the region for the second straight year. He shared the award this season with Grossmont's Jamie Ivers.

Pestolesi guided Irvine Valley to its second straight trip to the state championships and earned his first title after seeing the Lasers finish third in 2013.

Irvine Valley also won the Orange Empire Conference for the second year in a row. IVC hasn't lost a conference match since 2012.
