Women's volleyball team second in state in 2014 opening poll

The Irvine Valley women's volleyball team was ranked second in the first CCCWVCA Top 25 State Poll.

Irvine Valley finished third at the CCCAA State Championships last season and is off to a 2-0 start this year.

IVC, which is ranked first in Southern California, defeated NAIA power Concordia in five sets two weeks ago and then swept Canyons last Friday night.

Irvine Valley trails only defending state champion Cabrillo in the poll. Cabrillo, which is on a 33-match win streak, is also 2-0 so far this year.

The rest of the top 10 after Irvine Valley includes Grossmont at third, Foothill at fourth, El Camino at fifth, Feather River at sixth, Santa Barbara City at seventh, San Joaquin Delta at eighth, Golden West at ninth and Cypress at 10th.

Grossmont finished second in the state last season, losing to Cabrillo in the final.

Irvine Valley, led by 2-Year National Player of the Year and All-American Annie Mitchem and all-region setter Hailey Jones, is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Palomar for a 5 p.m. match.

Palomar was ranked 14th in the first state poll. It is off to a 3-0 start after beating Chaffey, Pasadena and San Bernardino Valley.

Irvine Valley will then host a quad match on Friday, playing Moorpark at 11 a.m. and then San Diego City at 2 p.m.

It will be Moorpark's first match of the season. The Raiders are ranked tied for 16th in Southern California in the first poll. San Diego City has a record of 2-0 so far.
