Women's volleyball team records road sweep at Canyons

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball team improved its record to 2-0 with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 victory at College of the Canyons on Friday night.

The Lasers had their toughest time in the second set. They trailed, 19-18, before rallying for the 25-21 win.

Irvine Valley was solid all-around in the contest. It hit .393 as a team, had just nine hitting errors and recorded 47 digs.

The Lasers, who were coming off a five-set win over NAIA four-year school Concordia University last week, were led once again by sophomore middle blocker Annie Mitchem.

The 6-2 Mitchem finished with 19 kills with two errors in 26 attempts (.654 hitting percentage). She also contributed 10 digs, three blocks and three aces.

Three other players also recorded at least five kills in the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Marisa Doran had nine kills and six digs and hit .316, freshman middle blocker Hannah Matt had seven kills and hit .636 and freshman opposite Juju Cannon added five kills.

Sophomore setter Hailey Jones finished with 37 assists and six digs for the Lasers.

Other contributors included sophomore outside hitter Kobi Pekich, who had 10 digs, sophomore outside hitter Shaelyn Perez, who had three kills, and freshman libero Emily Reinking, who chipped in eight digs.

Canyons saw its record slip to 1-1 on the season. The Cougars got 14 kills from Serena Leduff. Canyons hit .237 as a team for the match.

Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday, traveling to Palomar for a 6 p.m. match.
