Irvine Valley has another solid showing in NATYCAA Cup

Irvine Valley finished 31st out of 106 community colleges in the state in the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup.
The California Community College Athletic Association in association with the NATYCAA recently released the standings.

The Lasers ended up with 47 points, just a half of a point behind 30th place Pasadena City.

IVC finished ahead of Orange Empire Conference rivals schools Saddleback, Cypress and Norco.

And the Lasers were third on the list of non-football playing schools, trailing only Cuesta (22nd) and Santiago Canyon (29th).

Irvine Valley picked up points in three sports. The Lasers earned 19 points for finishing second in the state in men's tennis. It was the highest ever finish for the men's tennis program at IVC. This year's team was lead by Orange Empire Conference coach of the year Ross Duncan and OEC player of the year Guillermo Ucelay.

IVC also gained 18 points for taking third in the state in women's volleyball and 10 points for reaching the semifinals in the state in men's volleyball.

The Laser women's volleyball team won an Orange Empire Conference title and had freshman middle blocker Annie Mitchem named two-year national player of the year as well as All-American and the OEC MVP.

Coach Tom Pestolesi was recognized as the two-year regional coach of the year.

Mt. San Antonio (Mt. SAC) in Walnut took first overall with 176.5 points. It was the second straight year that Mt. SAC earned the top honor.

Orange Coast was second (172.5 points) and American River placed third with 148.5 points.

A college is awarded points based on its team's final positions in post-conference competition.

Each college's top-five men's and top-five women's team results count toward the school's overall point total.

NATYCAA is the professional organization of two-year college athletic administrators and membership is open to all two-year institutions throughout the country. The NATYCAA Awards were designed to recognize and reward overall program excellence at the two-year college level.  The criterion for the State Association's division was developed by the CCCAA in conjunction with the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA). This is the eleventh year that NATYCAA has sponsored a State Association's division.
