Women's tennis team stays unbeaten with close win at Cypress

Irvine Valley's women's tennis team swept Cypress on Tuesday at home.

But Thursday afternoon's match at Cypress wasn't so easy.

IVC, with only four players able to go on Thursday, pulled out a 5-4 Orange Empire Conference victory.

Irvine Valley won two of three doubles contests (it defaulted at No. 3 doubles) and then captured three of six singles matches (it defaulted at No. 4 and No. 5 singles) to pull out the victory.

In doubles action, IVC's No. 1 team of freshman Soleil Zsirbita and freshman Nicole Harper came out on top, 8-0, and the No. 2 team of freshman Valeska Fernandez and Amethyst Lam won, 8-3.

Zsirbita won, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, Harper beat Victoria Gomes, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 singles and Fernandez won at No. 3 singles. She took the first set, 6-1, and then her opponent had to retire in the second set.

Irvine Valley will play again next Tuesday at Orange Coast at 2 p.m. in a conference match. Orange Coast has a record of 3-0 so far this year.
