Women's tennis team players stand out at Ojai to finish season

Irvine Valley's men's and women's tennis players competed at the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships last week at the Ojai Tournament and turned in some solid results.

In women's action, the IVC doubles team of sophomore Halla Alajeely and freshman Sabrina Mendy reached the semifinals of the draw.

The duo, which was seeded fourth reached won four matches in all. Alajeely and Mendy reached the semis by beating the second-seeded team of Lisa Bargeman and Stephanie Huang of Chabot, 6-1, 2-6, 10-6.

Alajeely ended up falling in the semifinals to the eventual winners. The top-seeded team of Miri Inoue and Nicole Knickerbocker defeated Alajeely and Mendy, 7-6(2), 6-4.

In singles on the women's side, Mendy and freshman Ashley Le each reached the round of 16.

Mendy, who was a No. 7 seed, won two matches before losing to Huang of Chabot, 6-0, 6-1.

Le, who was seeded 15th, also won two matches, including upsetting third-seeded Aysha Hayes of Diablo Valley, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Irvine Valley finished the year with an 8-7 record overall and was 6-4 in the Orange Empire Conference for third place.

The Lasers made the dual team playoffs and defeated El Camino, 5-1, before losing in the semifinals to Riverside, 5-0.
