Women's tennis team earns No. 3 seed for So. Cal. Playoffs

Irvine Valley's women's tennis team earned the No. 3 seed and will host sixth-seeded Santa Barbara City in the opening round of the Southern California Regional team playoffs on Tuesday.

Irvine Valley has a record of 12-3 overall and went 8-2 to finish second in the Orange Empire Conference.

IVC's only losses of the season have come to the two teams ranked ahead of it in the So. Cal. Regionals. IVC lost to No. 1 Cerritos early in the season and then fell to second-seeded Orange Coast twice in conference play.

The Lasers are led by freshman standout Halla Alajeely and sophomore Fiorella Dreux.

Alajeely has a record of 10-1 on the year at No. 1 singles for the Lasers, while Dreux is 11-2 in singles.

The duo is 11-3 as IVC's top doubles team.

IVC freshman Abigail Perez is also 11-2 in singles for IVC.

Irvine Valley reached the So. Cal. Regional Playoffs semifinals last season and has made the playoffs four years in a row.

Santa Barbara City went 14-4 overall under first-year head coach Christina Klein and took second in the Western State Conference at 12-2.

The 14 wins were the most since 2001 when the Vaqueros went 20-0 and won the CCCAA State title.

SBCC is making its third playoff appearance in the last four years.

Katelyn Peyvandi is the No. 1 singles player. No. 4 Pia Valtierra had the best singles record this year (15-3), followed by No. 5 Hanna Pesniak (13-4) and No. 3 Josephine Pulver (12-5).

Cerritos (21-1) is the top seed, followed by defending state champion Orange Coast (16-1), Irvine Valley (12-3) and WSC champion Glendale (19-2).

The winner of Tuesday's match at Irvine Valley will play the Cerritos-San Diego City winner on Tuesday, Apr. 17.
