Women's tennis team starts 2018 year with 5-4 win at Glendale

Irvine Valley's women's tennis team started its season with a 5-4 win at Glendale on Thursday.

The Lasers were ranked No. 3 in the first Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association NJCAA Women's Regional Rankings for Southern California.

IVC is coming off of a nice 2017 season.

The Lasers won their second Orange Empire Conference title in program history, were ranked No. 1 by the ITA in So. Cal. during the season, made the playoffs and reached the semifinals of the CCCAA Team Dual Playoffs last season.

IVC returned two key players from last year and has a host of solid incoming players, including freshman standout Halla Alajeely from University High.

Alajeely played a part in two of the Lasers' points on Thursday at Glendale.

She defeated Srna Lepchevska, 6-0, 6-1, in No. 1 singles and also teamed with sophomore Fiorella Dreux for a 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles.

IVC split the singles matches and won two of three in doubles action.

Irvine Valley also got a 6-1, 6-0 win from Abigail Perez at No. 5 singles and a 6-0, 6-0 sweep from sophomore Lauren MacDonnell at No. 6 singles.

Along with Alajeely and Dreux's win at No. 1 doubles, the Lasers picked up a 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles from MacDonnell and freshman Anna Krechetova.

Irvine Valley is back in action next Thursday when it hosts Hope International at 2 p.m.
