Irvine Valley's women's tennis team won four of six singles matches and rallied to upset Glendale, 5-4, in its first match of the 2017 season on Tuesday at home.
Glendale was ranked No. 1 in Southern California in the preseason poll put out by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association last November.
Glendale captured two of the three doubles points to start.
The Lasers picked up a win at No. 3 doubles. Sophomore Samantha Paz and freshman Lauren MacDonnell defeated the team of Alexa Mendez and Melody Emmanouilidi, 8-3.
Paz and MacDonnell won the final four games of the match.
IVC lost close matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
The team of sophomore Sarah Mae Garcia and Fiorella Dreux fell, 9-7, to the team of Tsukimi Ono and Veronika Galtsyan at first doubles.
And the team of Lou Baize and Lorna Morris lost, 8-6, to Glendale's Hailey McNall and Kanako Kihara at the No. 2 spot.
But Irvine Valley came back to earn the overall victory with its tough play in singles.
Garcia topped McNall, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. McNall was ranked No. 2 in Southern California in singles in the ITA preseason poll.
Morris won, 6-2, 6-3, over Galtsyan at the No. 3 position, Dreux defeated Emmanoulidi, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
And in the deciding match of the day and lone three-set match of the contest, Baize held off Kihara, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to give IVC the victory.
Irvine Valley plays again next Tuesday at Cerritos at 2 p.m. Cerritos, which won the state dual team title last season, was No. 2 in the ITA preseason rankings.
