Women's tennis team ends regular season with win over rival

Irvine Valley's women's tennis team came away with a huge 6-3 Orange Empire Conference victory over Saddleback on Thursday in the final match of the regular season.

It was a win that just might get the Lasers into the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

The top eight teams from the region will be chosen when the brackets are released on Sunday afternoon.

Irvine Valley's win over Saddleback meant it finishes second place in the conference standings - just one match behind first-place Orange Coast.

IVC lost to OCC, 5-4, in another crucial conference match on Tuesday afternoon.

Irvine Valley made the playoffs last year after finishing in second place in the conference.

The win on Thursday improved Irvine Valley's record to 7-5 overall and 6-2 in conference.

Saddleback ended up taking third in conference.

IVC won four of six singles matches and two of four contests in doubles.

Freshman Sarah Mae Garcia won 7-5, 6-4 over Ashley Glick at the No. 1 singles position for the Lasers.

Freshman Lou Baize, sophomore Karina Ryabokonova and sophomore Sierra Mazzarini also earned wins in straight sets for IVC in singles.

In doubles action, IVC picked up a 9-8 (8-6) win from its top team of Garcia and freshman Samantha Schwarz over Saddleback's Glick and Dominique Willette and a 8-4 victory on the second court from freshman Samantha Paz and Baize over the Gaucho duo of Maddison Serklew and Kimiya Ataiyan.
