Women's tennis team stays within striking distance of first place

Irvine Valley's women's tennis team went on the road and beat Cypress, 6-3, in an Orange Empire Conference match on Tuesday afternoon.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 6-4 overall and 5-1 in conference.

It was the team's fifth win in its last six matches.

The Lasers trail Orange Coast by a match in the standings. The Pirates went to 5-0 after edging Riverside, 5-4, on Tuesday.

Irvine Valley won two doubles matches and four of six singles contests on Tuesday at Cypress.

Freshman Sarah Mae Garcia, freshman Lou Baize, sophomore Karina Ryabokonova and sophomore Sierra Mazzarini each won singles matches for IVC.

Garcia, Baize and Mazzarini each won in straight sets.

Garcia defeated Diana Dao, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot.

Garcia and freshman Samantha Schwarz teamed at No. 1 doubles to win, 8-3, and IVC also got a 8-1 win from the third team of Ryabokonova and Mazzarini.

Irvine Valley takes the next 10 days off for spring break and will get back to action on Tuesday, March 29 against Orange Coast at 2 p.m. on the IVC courts.
