Women's tennis team stays unbeaten with win over Mesa

Irvine Valley's women's tennis team is off to a solid start to the new season.

The Lasers won their second match in a row, defeating San Diego Mesa, 8-1, at home on Tuesday.

IVC started the season with a 6-3 win at El Camino last week. El Camino was ranked No. 4 in the ITA preseason Southern California poll.

Irvine Valley won all three doubles matches and five of six matches in singles to cruise to the win over Mesa on Tuesday.

All five of the Lasers' singles wins came in straight sets with the first two being easy.

Sophomore Renee Walton won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and sophomore Ashley Athanas earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 2 singles position.

IVC also got wins from sophomore Marissa Woolsey (6-3, 6-3) at No. 4 singles, freshman Tiana Cung (6-0, 6-2) at the No. 5 spot and from sophomore Parmida Navabsafavi (6-0, 6-4) at No. 6 singles.

In doubles, Irvine Valley's top team of Walton and Athanas won, 8-2.

Woolsey and Cung pulled out a 9-8 (7-5) win at No. 2 doubles and sophomores Christie Yamasaki and Ruth Chou won, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles.

In IVC's 6-3 win at El Camino last week, Athanas, Chou and Cung each won in singles and IVC swept the three doubles matches getting victories.

The Lasers got victories from the teams of Walton and Athanas, Cung and Woolsey and Chou and Navabsafavi.

Irvine Valley plays again on Thursday, traveling to Cerritos for a 2 p.m. match. Cerritos was ranked No. 1 in Southern California to start the year.
