
Irvine Valley's women's tennis team opened the 2014 season with a 7-2 non-conference loss at Cerritos on Tuesday.
The Lasers won a match each in singles and doubles.
Freshman Christine Yamasaki defeated Nina Pacquing, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 singles for the Lasers.
In doubles, the No. 3 team of freshman Julia Gotica and sophomore Anna Pham beat the team of Pacquing and Jessica Alcayde, 8-4.
IVC had a couple of other close calls. Freshman Ruth Chou played tough at No. 2 singles, but lost to Stef Flores, 6-2, 7-6.
And at No. 1 doubles, the team of freshman Renee Walton and Chou lost to Samantha Judan and Flores, 8-6.
Irvine Valley, which features six new players among its top six in singles, plays again on Thursday. It will host its first match of the season against Mt. SAC at 2 p.m.
