Women's soccer team hands out end of season awards

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team recently held its end of the year banquet last week and handed out several awards.

Sophomore defender Savanna Hayes was named the team's most valuable player, sophomore midfielder and forward Emily Rodriguez was chosen as the best offensive player, Cassandra Fuentes earned best defensive player honors and sophomore midfielder Heaven Hernandez was given the coaches' award.

Hayes was also named first team all-Orange Empire Conference this past season, while Fuentes was picked to the second team.

Hayes and Fuentes each started all 20 matches this past season for the Lasers.

Hayes was of the top defensive players in the conference. She also scored one goal on the season.

Fuentes was also strong and reliable for IVC on the defensive end. And she contributed three assists in 2018.

Rodriguez also played in all 20 IVC matches and was second on the team with 19 points. She recorded five assists, which tied for second on the team, and also recorded three assists.

Rodriguez had two goals against Santa Ana on Sept. 21 and she notched two goals and two assists as Irvine Valley defeated Norco, 5-3, at home on Oct. 2.

Hernandez, who was a two-year starter at Irvine Valley like Hayes, Rodriguez and Fuentes, finished the year with five goals and one assist for 11 points from her midfield spot.

She scored two goals in Irvine Valley's 8-0 victory over San Diego City on Aug. 30 and scored the team's lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Fullerton on Sept. 11.

Irvine Valley ended the season with a record of 3-10-7 overall and was 1-9-6 in conference play.
