Women's soccer team falls to Las Positas in final tourney game

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team wrapped up play in the Las Positas Tournament in Northern California with a 4-1 defeat to Las Positas on Saturday morning.

The Lasers ended the tournament with a record of 1-1, knocking off one ranked team, but falling to another.

IVC defeated City College of San Francisco on Thursday behind a goal from sophomore forward Emily Rodriguez and strong play by its defense, which is led by sophomore Savanna Hayes.

San Francisco was ranked No. 19 in the nation in last week's Division III community college poll put out by the United Soccer Coaches.

But Irvine Valley ran into a strong host squad in Las Positas on Saturday. Las Positas was ranked No. 7 in the country in Division III by the United Soccer Coaches and improved its record to 4-0-1 with the win over the Lasers.

Irvine Valley suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 2-1-1 overall.

The Lasers played Las Positas tough for most of the contest.

The Hawks scored first in the 29th minute, getting a goal from Meghan Giamona.

IVC tied the game midway through the second half, getting a goal from freshman midfielder Giselle Garcia off an assist from freshman midfielder Nancy Hernandez.

But Las Positas scored three goals in a 10 minute stretch shortly after to put the game away. Gabrielle Polizzi had the go-ahead goal for the Hawks in the 75th minute.

Irvine Valley freshman keeper Heather Miller ended up with seven saves on the day. Three Las Positas goalies combined to make nine saves.

Irvine Valley starts its Orange Empire Conference schedule next.

The Lasers hots Fullerton on Tuesday at home at 3 p.m.. Fullerton is off to a 3-1-0 start to the year.
