Women's soccer team upsets City College of San Francisco

The Irvine Valley women's soccer team continued its solid play on Thursday, knocking off the City College of San Francisco, 1-0, in an opening game of the Las Positas Tournament in Northern California.

San Francisco was ranked No. 19 in the nation in this week's Division III community college poll put out by the United Soccer Coaches.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 2-0-1 on the season and has now won two straight contests.

The Lasers got their goal in the 33rd minute when sophomore forward Emily Rodriguez stole the ball in the San Francisco defensive end and then found the back of the net.

Irvine Valley's defense, led by sophomore captain Savanna Hayes did the rest, in the team's second straight shutout victory.

Freshman goalie Bryana Esparza had three saves and freshman goalie Heather Miller came up with three saves.

Irvine Valley plays again on Saturday, taking on host Las Positas. Las Positas is ranked seventh in this week's national Division III poll.
