Irvine Valley's women's soccer team showed flashes against LA Pierce in the 2018 season opener on Tuesday at home.

The Lasers scored in the first half, gave up two quick goals in the second half, but rallied in the final minutes with a goal by returning all-Orange Empire Conference player Savanna Hayes for a 2-2 tie against the Brahmas.

Coach Joe Supe was pleased with the effort, which saw Irvine Valley out-shoot LA Pierce, 16-6, including having 10 of those shots on goal.

"We just have to put more chances away and we had some real good ones today," Supe said. "As long as they keep playing together as a team and gel in the next few games, we should be ready and have a real chance in the Orange Empire Conference."

Super was especially impressed by the work turned in by freshman midfielders Nancy Hernandez, Kellian Lorenzen, Giselle Garcia and Maria Salgado and freshman forward Cierra Savin.

"They all worked really had," he said. "The freshmen we brought in have talent. Adding them to our sophomores like Savanna, Cassie (Cassandra Fuentes), Jade Stewart, Emily Rodriguez and Heaven Hernandez is going to make a big difference."

Irvine Valley took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute when Lorenzen lofted in a corner kick that Stewart was able to get her head on and put away.

Salgado had two good chances in the first half, including a shot that went just over the top on a one-time attempt.

The Lasers led, 1-0, at halftime.

But the Brahmas scored two goals within three minutes to take the lead.

Keyonna Hill scored in the 58th minute and then after IVC couldn't clear the ball, Gisell Cruz found the back of the net to give LA Pierce a 2-1 advantage.

But the Lasers battled back and were on the attack for most of the rest of the contest.

Garcia hit a left-footed shot from the top of the box that Pierce goalie Iliana Yanez was able to get a foot on and save.

And then Rodriguez made a nice run into the box and took a shot that Yanez made a diving save for.

Another attempt by Garcia sailed just over the top of the goal.

Nancy Hernandez then hit a high shot from just outside of the box that hit Yanez's fingertips and then bounced off the crossbar and out in the 83rd minute.

But IVC was able to capitalize in the 87th minute. After a foul was called on the left side, Lorenzen floated a cross that got through the Pierce defense and Hayes was on the back post to tap it home.

The match ended shortly after.

Yanez ended up making eight saves for Pierce, while freshman Heather Miller had to make just one save in the first half for Irvine Valley. Freshman Bryana Esparza played the second half for the Lasers.

The Lasers play again on Thursday, hosting San Diego City at 3 p.m. The Knights lost their opener to Long Beach City, 7-0, on Tuesday.
