Women's soccer team wins second straight, shuts out Norco

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team picked up its second straight shutout win and continued to move up the standings in the Orange Empire Conference with a 4-0 victory over Norco at home on Friday.

Irvine Valley scored all four goals in the second half, including getting two from sophomore defender Savanna Hayes.

The Lasers improved their record to 2-7-4 overall and 2-2-3 in conference.

After a frustrating first half in which IVC was kept off the scoreboard despite out-shooting Norco, 14-1, Irvine Valley found the back of the net and took the lead for good in the 55th minute.

Irvine Valley's first goal came from Hayes as she headed in a cross from sophomore midfielder Yvette Belman.

The Lasers made it a 2-0 game in the 65th minute when sophomore forward Luci Bernal scored off another cross from Belman.

IVC added to its lead in the 73rd minute when Hayes scored her second goal of the game. She took hold of a loose ball just outside the top of the Norco box and flicked it over the keeper's head an in to give Irvine Valley a 3-0 advantage.

And sophomore midfielder Karla Rodriguez capped the scoring for IVC in the 84th minute.

Freshman midfielder Jaqueline Losada took a shot that was saved by the Norco goalie, but Rodriguez was there to knock the rebound in for the first goal in her IVC career.

IVC freshman goalie Marissa Banos had to make just one save in the contest for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley out-shot Norco, 26-1, for the game.

The Lasers play again next Tuesday in a huge match at home. IVC hosts rival Saddleback at 3 p.m. in a conference contest.
