Women's soccer team falls in home opener to Moorpark

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team had plenty of chances, but couldn't turn them into goals in a 3-1 loss to Moorpark on Tuesday at home.

The Lasers out-shot the Raiders, 14-9.

Moorpark made the most of its opportunities, however.

The Raiders scored on their second shot of the game in the 19th minute.

After IVC lost the ball in the midfield, Moorpark countered quickly and Alyssa Rodriguez beat Laser keeper Samantha Carter with a hard shot to the right side.

Sophomore forward Brenda Chopin had two good chances for IVC in the first half. Her shot in the 26th minute just sailed over the top of the bar.

Freshman forward Jade Stewart had a shot from close range saved by the Moorpark keeper just before halftime.

Irvine Valley kept coming forward in the second half and tied the game in the 52nd minute. Chopin placed a through ball to sophomore midfielder Emily Rodriguez and she finished a right-footed shot to make it a 1-1 game. It was Rodriguez's second goal of the young season.

Two minutes later, Chopin nearly gave IVC the lead, but her left-footed shot from close range was right at the Moorpark keeper.

Moorpark took the lead for good in the 63rd minute when Valerie Romero took a pass from Michelle Rodriguez and scored.

Carter made a nice save in goal for the Lasers in the 75th minute. Tipping a shot from Alyssa Rodriguez over the bar.

But Moorpark put the game away in the 83rd minute when Romero scored on a one-time shot off a pass from Elizabeth Rodriguez.

Carter finished with three saves for the Lasers in the contest.

Irvine Valley, which saw its record slip to 0-3-0 overall, plays again on Friday at home. The Lasers host Southwestern at 3 p.m.
