Women's soccer team scores six in dominant win over Norco

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team scored its most goals in a game this season, beating Norco, 6-1, in an Orange Empire Conference match at IVC on Tuesday afternoon.

The win also snapped a four-match losing streak for the Lasers. They improved their record to 6-11-2 overall and 4-9-2 in conference. Norco's record fell to 2-17-0 overall and 0-15-0 in conference.

Irvine Valley scored the first six goals of the contest. Six different players scored.

In the 16th minute, freshman forward Brenda Chopin beat two defenders down the right side and then sent a cross to the back post where freshman forward Johana Abarca headed it in.

IVC added to its lead in the 31st minute on another assist from Chopin. She fed sophomore forward Crystal Lefebvre in the box and Lefebvre hammered a left-footed shot that found the upper left corner.

Irvine Valley went up, 3-0, in the 43rd minute. Sophomore defender Marissa Perez sent a pass forward to freshman midfielder Hannah Thetford. Thetford one-timed a left-footed shot over Norco goalie Natalie Ayala and into the back of the net.

Two minutes into the second half, Irvine Valley made it a 4-0 game.

Freshman defender Kirsten McMillian tapped home a free kick by Thetford after Ayala fumbled the ball on the goal line.

Freshman midfielder Payton Purcell scored Irvine Valley's fifth goal. In the 53rd minute, she headed in a cross off a corner kick from sophomore defender Christina Anderson.

And Anderson capped Irvine Valley's scoring in the 77th minute with a goal off a pass from Abarca.

Norco got on the board in the 82nd minute when Evelyn Espinoza scored off a free kick from Tiana Espinoza.

Irvine Valley freshman goalie Rebecca Trejo had to make just one save in the contest.

Thetford, McMillian and Purcell each recorded their first goals of the season.

Lefebvre scored her team-leading sixth goal and the two assists by Chopin were her team-leading ninth and 10th of the year.

The Lasers play their final match of the season on Friday, hosting Saddleback at 1 p.m.
