Perez drives women's soccer team to big win at Golden West

The Irvine Valley women's soccer team made it two straight wins in Orange Empire Conference play.

The Lasers scored a 4-0 win at Golden West on Tuesday afternoon.

It matched the most goals in a game in the last two-plus seasons under head coach Joe Supe. IVC defeated Santa Ana, 4-1, last year.

Irvine Valley has out-scored opponents, 15-2, now on the season.

More importantly, the Lasers improved their record to 5-1-2 overall and 2-1-0 in conference. Through three matches, IVC is tied for third in the conference standings with six points.

"I was really happy with the performance and result," Supe said of Tuesday's victory.

The star of the game for IVC on Tuesday was freshman defender Marissa Perez. She was involved in all four IVC goals. She ended with one goal and three assists.

Perez assisted sophomore forward Tiana Salazar for the team's first goal in the 26th minute.

Her second assist might have been her best play of the match, according to Supe. She set up sophomore midfielder Kristen Ostler for a goal.

"It was impressive," Supe said. "Marissa took the ball from our box all the way to their box and found Kristie for the goal."

That goal in the 31st minute put Irvine Valley up, 2-0.

Perez then scored off a pass from freshman Chelsea Gatdula a minute into the second half to make it a 3-0 game.

Salazar netted her second goal of the match off a Perez assist in the 75th minute to cap the scoring.

The two goals were Salazar's team-leading third and fourth of the season.

Perez now has one goal and four assists on the year.

"She played great," Supe said of Perez. "She is a great defender, but she can also go forward, pass and handle the ball."

Supe was also pleased with the play of freshman goalie Yesenia Pulido, who played all 90 minutes and recorded the shutout.

It was Pulido's second appearance and first start of the season.

"She is a pro back there," Supe said. "She manages the box so well."

Irvine Valley will go for its third victory in a row this Friday when it hosts Santa Ana at 3 p.m. in a conference match.
