Women's soccer team looks strong in opener, but ends with draw

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team dominated its 2014 season-opening match everywhere except the scoreboard.

The Lasers out-shot Palomar, 20-4, had several chances to score and missed a penalty kick on Thursday afternoon at Palomar.

Palomar and Irvine Valley ended up in a 0-0 tie.

"I was very pleased with what I saw in our play," IVC third-year coach Joe Supe said. "We looked pretty good for our first time out.

"We just have to continue to work on finishing in the attacking third of the field."

Supe said all of his starters played well and those that came in as substitutes also contributed.

The Lasers went with a starting lineup of freshman striker Rosa Soto Aleman, freshmen midfielders Christina Anderson, Brittany Jenkins and Virginia Hickman, sophomore midfielders Kristen Ostler and Courtney Smith, freshman defenders Marissa Perez and Evelyn Lucatero and sophomore defenders Celina Chang and Emely Portillo with freshman Herminia Verduzco in goal.

"Our center mid triangle of Courtney, Brittany and Virginia worked so hard and did a great job of keeping possession for us," Supe said. "I thought Kristie (Ostler) and Rosa created a lot of chances. They both worked hard to win the ball and pressed hard. They were busy and took it to the defense. Plenty of our players had shots that went just wide or over the top.

"I thought the defense did its job. Marissa showed a lot of speed as left back. And I thought Mini (Verduzco) had great timing for the first game. She can really handle the ball."

Supe said he is expecting to see his team play even stronger next week in two home matches.

The Lasers host San Diego City on Wednesday at 3 p.m. and then LA Harbor on Friday at 3 p.m.

IVC is coming off of one of its best ever seasons last year. The Lasers finished with a record of 11-7-2, were ranked in the state poll at one point during the season and were just a few points away from making the post-season.
