Women's soccer team holds end of the season banquet

The Irvine Valley women's soccer team concluded one of the best seasons in school history with its year-end banquet recently.

The Lasers finished with a record 11-7-2 overall, finished fifth in the tough Orange Empire Conference and just missed the So. Cal. Regional Playoffs.

They were also ranked in the state poll at one point this season.

Coaches Joe Supe, Peter Carey and Jacqueline Turner also handed out several awards.

Sophomore forward Yasmin Hart was named the team's most valuable player.

Hart led the team with eight goals, tied for first in assists with four and paced the team in points with 20.

She ranked eighth in the conference in goals and tied for fourth in assists.

The offensive player of the year was sophomore midfielder/defender Kelly Cox.

Cox was integral on both ends of the field for the Lasers and finished with two assists on the season. She helped up set up many of the Lasers goals this season with passes through to the forwards and crosses.

The defensive player of the year was freshman defender Amanda George.

George, in her first year with the Lasers, helped IVC give up just 32 goals in 20 matches this season. Irvine Valley posted six shutouts this season and gave up just one goal in a game six other times.

Sophomore defender Madisen Hammonds earned the coaches' award.

Hammonds, who along with Cox were captains on the team, finished with three goals and two assists and was a leader on the field all season for the Lasers. She had two goals in a 4-1 win at Santa Ana.

And freshman midfielder Kristen Ostler took home the most improved player award.

Ostler made herself a regular part of the starting lineup throughout the season.

Supe is already excited about next season, but said he will miss the contributions of eight sophomores including Emma Connelly, Kelsi Chrzan, Hammonds, Hart, Ashly Romero, Desirea Santana, Wendy Rendon and Cox.
