Women's soccer team falls to Cypress at home

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team played Cypress much tougher this time around, but it wasn't enough to earn a victory.

Cypress scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute and came away with a 1-0 Orange Empire Conference victory over the Lasers on Friday at IVC.

Cypress defeated Irvine Valley, 4-0, the first time the two teams met at Cypress on Oct. 1.

Friday's win moved Cypress into third place by itself in the Orange Empire Conference standings.

Heading into the match, Irvine Valley, Cypress and Saddleback were tied for third in the conference.

Orange Coast defeated Saddleback, 2-0, also on Friday.

Santiago Canyon is in first in the conference with 31 points, Orange Coast is second with 26 points and now Cypress is solely in third with 25 points.

Irvine Valley and Saddleback are tied for fourth with 22 points each. IVC travels to Saddleback for a big 7 p.m. night game next Tuesday night.

There are four matches left in the regular season.

Cypress had the better of the chances in the first half on Friday against IVC.

Irvine Valley freshman goalie Shannon Duffy made a diving save off a one-time left-footed shot by Alex Ishihara in the seventh minute.

Ishihara then missed wide left on a chance in the box a few minutes later.

IVC picked up its play in the second half, but it was Cypress that scored the lone goal.

Jade Perez was taken down in the box and the Chargers were awarded a penalty kick.

Kendra Serrano made the PK, finding the lower left corner of the goal.

Irvine Valley continued to push forward the rest of the way, but couldn't find an equalizer.

The Lasers' record slipped to 10-4-2 overall and 7-4-1 in conference. Cypress improved to 9-5-2 overall and 8-3-1 in conference.
