Women's soccer team wins thriller at Golden West

Irvine Valley's women's soccer team picked up its second straight win and third in four matches with an important 3-2 Orange Empire Conference victory at Golden West on Friday.

The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 9-3-2 overall and 6-3-1 in conference.

It also lifted Irvine Valley into a tie for fourth place in the conference with 19 points.

And the Lasers are just two points out of second place. Santiago Canyon leads with 28 points, Golden West is in second with 21 points, Orange Coast is in third with 20 points and IVC and Saddleback are next with 19 points.

On Friday at Golden West, all five of the game's goals were scored in the first half.

Irvine Valley took a 2-0 lead, Golden West came back to tie it at 2-2 and then the Lasers scored the game-winner just before the end of the first half.

Sophomore forward Yasmin Hart got Irvine Valley started with a goal in the ninth minute off an assist from freshman forward Tiana Salazar.

Salazar then scored a goal of her own, taking a pass from Kelly Cox, turning and nailing a half volley into the back of the net in the 14th minute.

After Golden West tied the match, sophomore midfielder Ashly Romero scored the game-winner in the 42nd minute on a breakaway. Hart set up the play.

IVC's defense did the rest in the second half to keep the game scoreless the rest of the way.

Freshman goalie Shannon Duffy had eight saves in goal.

Irvine Valley has two home matches next week. The Lasers host Norco on Tuesday at 1 p.m. and then host Cypress next Friday at 3 p.m.

Norco had a bye Friday, while Orange Coast defeated Cypress, 5-1.
