Women's soccer team wins big at Santa Ana

Irvine Valley scored its most goals in a match this season, winning at Santa Ana, 4-1, in an Orange Empire Conference contest on Friday.

Irvine Valley, ranked 14th in the state, had previously scored three goals in two other games this year.

The win was a big one for IVC as it snapped a three-match winless streak.

Irvine Valley was coming off a 4-0 loss to Cypress, a 1-1 tie with Saddleback and a 2-0 loss to Santiago Canyon. All three of those teams have been ranked in the state this season and Santiago Canyon is currently positioned at No. 2.

Friday's win improved Irvine Valley's record to 7-2-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference. Santa Ana slipped to 2-10-1 overall and 0-7-1 in conference. It was Santa Ana's sixth straight loss.

The Lasers got the first goal on the board in just the second minute. Sophomore forward Yasmin Hart sent a pass through the Dons defense to the left side of the field. The pass found freshman forward Tiana Salazar, who had a shot at a nearly open net for the goal.

Irvine Valley led, 1-0, at halftime.

Santa Ana leveled the score in the 54th minute when Makenna Roa found Kristina Alatorre at the top of the box. Alatorre then took a dribble and scored the tying goal.

But sophomore defender Madisen Hammonds came through for the Lasers when it counted.

She scored back-to-back goals in the 56th and 61st minutes on free kicks.

Hammonds took the free kick on both fouls from the left side, quickly putting the Lasers up, 3-1.

Hart scored the fourth goal for IVC in the 81st minute. She worked her way around the Dons' defense and then beat the goalie. Salazar picked up the assist on the goal.

In goal for the Dons was Katie Delgado who saved four of the eight shots she faced in 90 minutes. Freshman Shannon Duffy made six saves for the Lasers while allowing one goal in 90 minutes.

Irvine Valley plays again on Tuesday, hosting Orange Coast at 3 p.m.
