Women's golf team in seventh after first day at state

Irvine Valley freshman Araceli Esquivel and sophomore Marisa Bhanubandh each got off to solid starts on the opening day of the CCCAA Women's Golf State Championships at Morro Bay Golf Course on Sunday.

Esquivel used back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes to post a 2 over par score of 74 on the day.

Bhanubandh, the Orange Empire Conference player of the year, was not far behind with a 5 over par score of 77.

Both were in the hunt for all-state honors heading into the second and final round on Monday.

All-state awards go to the top six individual scorers.

Irvine Valley freshman Akie Sanommiya shot 89 and freshman Esther Kim carded 109 to place Irvine Valley seventh out of eight teams in the field.

The Lasers, who had a team score of, 349, led Saddleback by two strokes (351).

Santa Barbara City (312) led Cuyamaca by six strokes (318) for the overall lead. And Carolin Chang shot an even-par round of 72 for Santa Barbara City to be the low scorer of the day.
