Women's golf team qualfies for CCCAA State Championship

The Irvine Valley women's golf team is back in the CCCAA State Championship.

The Lasers qualified for the event through the CCCAA women's golf southern regional championship tournament at the Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills this week.

Irvine Valley was in third place after the first day on Monday and held on to that third-place spot in the second and final round on Tuesday.

Irvine Valley placed third with a score of 700.

Santa Barbara City won the regional title with a score of 633. Cuyamaca was fourth at 634.

The top four teams and six individuals out of the regional championships earn the opportunity to advance to the state championship. Saddleback was the fourth-place team with a score of 716.

Orange Empire Conference sophomore player of the year Marisa Bhanubandh led Irvine Valley with a 36-hole, two-day total of 161 (85-76) on the par 148 Los Serranos Country Club courses.

She finished eighth individually. Bhanubandh had four birdies, eight pars and six bogeys for her 76 on the second day.

Freshman Araceli Esquivel (83-79) was a stroke behind at 162, which was good for 10th place. She had one birdie, 12 pars, four bogeys and one double bogey on the second day.

Freshman Akie Sannomiya finished 32nd with a score of 187 (91-96) and freshman Victoria Vasko was IVC's fourth and final scoring player at 190 (94-96). Vasko placed 35th individually.

Sannomiya finished with four pars, eight bogeys, four double bogeys and two triple bogeys on the second day and Vasko had one birdie, three pars, seven bogeys, five double bogeys and two triple bogeys on the second day.

Irvine Valley, under the leadership of coach Ben Burnett, has produced state champion team titles in 2010 and 2012.

In 2013, Leleiga Mereidith won the individual state championship. She received a three-year full scholarship to Division I Grand Canyon University.
