Kim and Peng pace women's golf team to second-place finish

Sophomore Hyerin Kim's score of 83 and sophomore Rebecca Peng's score of 85 paced the Irvine Valley women's golf team to wins over every Orange Empire Conference team except the College of the Desert at the Saddleback College hosted match at Arroyo Trabuco on Wednesday.

IVC coach Ben Burnett said scores were higher than expected due to the Arroyo Trabuco golf course dealing with the drought conditions.

"The sloping fairways played even faster than normal," he said. " Many first putts were short, leaving challenging second putts."

Irvine Valley finished with a score of 356 to take second and a 7-1 record. Desert went 8-0 against the conference teams with a score of 341.

Mt. An Antonio was third at 361 and Palomar finished fourth at 366 in the nine-team field.

Desert's Fumika Matsumoto was the medalist at 73.

Kim's score was good enough for third individually for IVC. Peng finished fifth.

Irvine Valley's third scorer was sophomore Stuti Mandal, who shot 91. Sophomore Liliana Gutierrez came in at 97.

The Lasers improved their record to 61-19 overall in conference.

Mt. SAC sits in first at 75-5 and Desert is second at 68-12.

The conference finals will be played at the Sun Lakes Golf Course in Banning next Monday and Wednesday.

Mt. SAC, Desert and IVC will be playing in three-player groupings beginning at 7:30 am each day.
