Women's golf team earns another high finish in OEC match

The Irvine Valley women's golf team moved within a match of second place in the Orange Empire Conference with another impressive performance on Wednesday.

The Lasers posted a record of 7-1 for the third straight match, finishing with a team score of 345 on Wednesday at Diamond Bar Golf Course.

The match was hosted by Fullerton.

In six conference matches so far, Irvine Valley has recorded a 7-1 record in four of them.

Irvine Valley has ended ahead of defending state champion College of the Desert in each of those contests.

Mt. SAC continued to lead the conference after going 8-0 at Diamond Bar on Wednesday with a score of 330.

The Mounties improved their record to 45-3.

College of the Desert, which went 6-2 on Wednesday with a score of 350, stands in second place at 39-9 with Irvine Valley right behind at 38-10.

Wednesday's conference match was held on the par 73 Diamond Bar course.

IVC sophomore Hyerin Kim posted two birdies, 10 pars, four bogeys and two double bogeys for her 6 over par score of 79. Kim finished third individually. She was two shots back of medalist and reigning conference MVP Fumika Matsumoto of College of the Desert. Sarah Julech of Mt. SAC was second at 78.

Irvine Valley coach Ben Burnett said that hot temperatures and very bumpy, recently punched greens made it difficult to post low scores at Diamond Bar.

"But I was really happy with the team's effort," Burnett said. "I'm especially pleased with the improvement of sophomore Stuti Mandal. She has moved into the No. 3 spot on the team with frequent helpful scores in the 80's."

The team travels to Morro Bay, for a Sunday/Monday Invitational Tournament. The Morro Bay course will also be the site of the State Championships in November.

Conference teams are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 30, when Orange Coast hosts a conference event at the Costa Mesa Country Club's Mesa Linda course.
