Women's golf team gets off to good start at South Coast tourney

The Irvine Valley women's golf team finished seventh out of 11 teams at the first tournament of the season, the South Coast Tournament, which finished on Monday.

The Lasers ended with a score of 677 after shooting 347 as a team on Sunday at Olivas Links in Ventura and then 330 as a team on Monday at Buena Ventura.

Santa Barbara City won the event with a team score of 607. Citrus was second at 641, Sierra was third at 651, College of the Desert was fourth at 659 and Canyons finished fifth at 660.

IVC sophomore Hyerin Kim finished with a two-day total of 150 to make the all-tournament team.

On the first day at Olivas Links, she shot 78 with 12 pars and six bogeys. And on the second day at Buena Ventura, she carded 72 on two birdies, 12 pars and four bogeys.

Sophomore Rebecca Peng scored 89 in the first round and 80 in the second round for 169.

Sophomore Stuti Mandal finished at 178, sophomore Liliana Gutierrez came in at 184 and freshman Alexis McLachlan was at 191 for the Lasers.

Irvine Valley was third out of the four Orange Empire Conference teams that competed in the event behind College of the Desert and Mt. San Antonio (661).

"Realistic goals for our team will keep the team scores in the 320 to 330 range and battle for a top-three finish in conference. It appears that Hyerin Kim has the potential to earn all-state honors.

Rebecca Peng will also have chance to advance to the state tournament. Overall, I was pleased with our performance in the South Coast Tournament."

Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday in an all-team Orange Empire Conference match hosted by Mt. San Jacinto at Soboba Springs.
