Women's golfer Leleaga Meredith wins individual state title

Sophomore women's golfer Leleaga Meredith finished up a fabulous career at Irvine Valley by claiming the individual title at California Community College Athletic Association state championship on Monday afternoon at Morro Bay golf course.

Meredith shot an even-par round of 72 on Monday to go with a 75 on the first day on Sunday to capture the state champion honor at 147.

April Chang (Sierra College) carded a 2-over-par 74 on Monday and finished as the state runner-up at 151. Citrus College teammates Jamie Lopez and Lexandra So finished third and fourth, respectively, after finishing the 36-hole championship event at 155. Lopez's 78 on Monday was the fourth-best score of the day.

Meredith ended up tied for second at last year's state championship event and took third overall after a card-off.

She has been a two-year all-state, two-year all-regional and two-year all-Orange Empire Conference player for Irvine Valley.

Irvine Valley sophomore Cindy Dang, also playing as an individual at Morro Bay, placed 12th overall with a two-day total of 162. She shot 78 on Sunday and then followed that up with an 84 on Monday.

In the team competition, College of the Desert held off College of the Canyons for the state title.

This was the first year that the CCCAA women's golf state championship was held in Morro Bay.

The course was recently selected to be the permanent site of the women's golf state championship.

Even more information about Meredith's remarkable performance at state will be posted in the next day.
