Women's golf team in first after opening day of regionals

Irvine Valley's women's golf team was in first place after the first day of the two-day Southern California Regionals at the Temecula Creek Resort and Inn on Monday.

Irvine Valley finished with a four-player score of 338 to best the likes of Fullerton (343), College of the Desert (344), College of the Canyons (349) and Santa Barbara City (378).

IVC sophomore Leleaga Meredith was the medalist on the day with a low score of 75.

She was just one of four players to shoot in the 70's in the round. Meredith, a two-time all-Orange Empire Conerence player, placed third at the State Championships last season.

Sophomore Cindy Dang, another two-year all-conference player for the Lasers, shot 80 and was followed by freshman Rebecca Peng (88) and freshman Liliana Gutierrez (95).

IVC freshman Stuti Mandel had the throw-out score of 100 for IVC.

"My goal for the team was to peak at this time," IVC coach Ben Burnett said of his team, which finished second behind College of the Desert in the OEC standings. "We used our conference finals as a final tune-up for the regional and state events. Hopefully this strategy pays off."

Irvine Valley was set to continue the two-day regional event on Tuesday at Temecula Creek Inn.
